New applications are being created everyday for using and the inclusion of, RSS Feeds.

Just this morning I have read of two downloadable applications that scan and provide feed content to user’s desktops in a ticker type fashion. This is a little different than a personal RSS reader as the program is actually supplied by a marketer or company preloaded with the marketing RSS url and no other URLs are ever to be added to the reader.

Having news on YOUR computer’s desktop might not be right for YOU, but it is definately right for MANY others who desire to be in constant contact with their favorite writers, companies and product creators.

Could YOU think of a more VALUABLE place to have your site’s newest articles and product offerings displayed than on a personal desk or laptop screen?

Besides new applications for feeds I’m also noticing plenty of websites cropping up that are either using other’s RSS feeds (hopefully they’re using one of yours!) for their own content, or are aggregating feeds for subscribers. Others still are simply directories of RSS Feeds, something you’ll definately want to stay abreast of and be listed in.

The feed you create today will have ‘long arms’ reaching out to new prospects.

RSS Feed Strategy for Web Promotion

This strategy was written in October of 2004 for website owners that didn’t have, nor did they want, a blog. These website owners were more interested in spending 20 minutes to create and promote a standalone RSS Feed for their html or asp websites. All, that stayed in contact with me, saw phenomenal success (even with brand new websites) with this strategy…

  1. Determine your targeted keywords.
  2. Write your RSS Feed’s content.
  3. Download and use the trial feed creation software.
  4. Add the ‘secret’ code I gave you to your home page’s html.
  5. Submit your feed to the directories.

In this Strategy/Game Plan the client owns and operates a feature-rich hosting company.

What you’ll read below are snippets of our late 2004 conversation with this Stampede Secret customer.

Step 1: Determine Your Uniqueness…

You can use RSS feeds for anything…mostly what you’d want to use it for is getting people to your site where you can sell them one of your packages.

I’m looking at your site and I see that there are a few things that ‘set you apart’ from most other web hosting companies. (1) You give a free domain with purchase, and (2) You are personally accessible for support.

I also see (by looking at your order page) that included in the packages are free and easy forums, chat rooms and guest-books with their account. I’d say your service is feature packed!

Step 2: Keyword Research…*

First, we’ll pinpoint some keywords…

With a little keyword research we notice that:

3.3. million searches are done every 60 days for web hosting
190,000 for web hosting provider
82,000 discount web hosting
65,000 cheap web hosting
57,000 computing web hosting
24,000 business web hosting
17,000 affordable web hosting
15,000 web hosting company
15,000 web hosting frontpage
12,000 internet web site hosting
…and on…

Now, why did we do that generic level of keyword research? Because (a) we want to know what our market at large is looking for as well as (b) to check out the competition!

Step 3: Check Out The Competition…

Let’s see what other companies like yours are doing with their feeds…

Head over to and next to the Yahoo Search input box we’re going to click on the Advanced text link (just to the right of the box – shown as purple in the example below).

On the page that results, scroll 1/2 way down and you’ll see:

Choose RSS/XML (.xml) from the drop down list.

Then, back to the top of the page, we’ll enter “web hosting provider” (without the quotes) into the ‘Show Results With: all of these words’ input box.

37,500 XML results for that keyword phrase!

I’d hazard a guess that last year at this time there were less than 1/2 that amount – which is why it is imperative that you get your feed for your site set up now.

Just for interest, head back over to

In the regular search box (not Advanced), type “web hosting provider” (without the quotes).

Here’s the results:

15.6 million PAGE results for the search term “web hosting provider”!

Now we see how sometimes it is just so much easier to drive traffic to our websites using RSS Feeds than using traditional search engine optimization! It’s much easier to get attention in a list of 37,000 than it is in a list of 16 million!

But there’s still work to be done, because getting attention in a list of 37,000 is still not easy enough odds for your first feed, which is why you might consider digging a little deeper into the keywords and current competition…at least to start.

Your task and your goal…

Do the RSS/XML search a few times using different keywords. You’ll probably spend an hour or so at it – but this is time well invested!

Here’s the desired outcome…

To find a popular keyword phrase that people use at the traditional search engines that relate to your business…but without much competition in the feed directories.

With a little diligence you can easily get your site’s feed to the top of the results of under 3,000 listings. And believe me, that’s a great place to be!

Step 4: Further Define Your RSS Traffic Strategy and Implement!

We didn’t spend much time at this research (we leave that task to website owners) so what you will read below may not be the best keyword strategy for a web hosting provider, but it serves as a good example.

This is what you’ll do, take your original list of good keywords from Step 2 (above) and feed them into yahoo (Step 3) until you have found a keyword that isn’t well served.

Back to the example:

Remember that one of the unique features this customer offers is FrontPage integration.

And a regularly searched term at the traditional search engines is:

“web hosting frontpage” (15,000)

Currently on yahoo, 5.9 million web pages show up as results for this keyword.

But on yahoo’s xml listings, only 1,500 feeds result for that keyword.

And, in the #1 spot, the word ‘frontpage’ doesn’t even exist in the title!

So, this may very well be the best-bet strategy (no guarantees, just that this strategy appears to be a prime opportunity) for your first attempt at capitalizing on free traffic with RSS Feeds.

Next Steps for the Over-Delivering Web Host Provider:

  1. Create an RSS Feed about your web hosting service.
  2. Use the term ‘web hosting’ as well as ‘frontpage’ in the title.
  3. Use these same terms 5-6 times in the overall content of your feed.
    (You do not have to run these words together throughout, just make sure they’re in the content).
  4. Submit your feed to the feed directories as outlined in The Stampede Secret.
  5. An hour or so after you submit your feed for the first time to, add another item to the feed.
  6. Add the RSS Discovery tag to your home page as described in the member’s area..
  7. For the first few days try to add one new item per day to your feed.

This is so easy…Discover your market’s keywords, assess the results, create a feed that meets the criteria, and get them to click through to your site! Once they’re on your web page you can introduce your services and sell them with your uniqueness.

A few bonus considerations to getting traffic with RSS Feeds

If you’re stumped for content ideas to place into your RSS Feed, try:

  1. Link up to existing pages on your site (even if they’ve been there for months!)
  2. Add the occasional off-site affiliate link into the mix.
  3. Link to off-site related content or news stories.
  4. Link to a page of testimonials from your clients.
  5. Provide useful free downloads on your site and add the link to your feed.
  6. Anything that you link to from your website, you can use within your feed. Just try not to take your feed subscribers off-site too often.

Non-Geeks Explore RSS (A Primer)

It was early 2004 when I first started learning and getting excited about using RSS Feeds to drive traffic to websites.

But the excitement did little good in my circle of friends and contacts because each one was a self-confessed non-geek! They didn’t want to hear about code and snippets, items and XML no matter what it might mean for their online business.

They didn’t want to talk about it, that is, until they saw the results and Alexa stats from one of my old websites that I hadn’t done anything to for a full year!

I’ll show you those results and the stats if you like. At the time I didn’t even know what I was doing with RSS Feeds or how to turn them into real powerhouses, but I still had a 629% increase in readership within a month of employing just one feed on my tired site.

That’s not a typo! The proof is here – RSS Feeds increase Traffic – on one of Stampede Secret’s old ‘member’s only’ pages.

Let’s get back to the original story…

No one else may have wanted to talk about this new geek way of getting website traffic, but one man listened. And he helped me bring the news to the online marketing community with the release of The Stampede Secret.

Today, we’ll focus on RSS Syndication News Feeds and the current complexity of them. You’ll understand why it is so confusing and have made sense of it all by the end of this course.

A lot of people right now don’t have a clue what an RSS Feed is. They’ve either heard rumblings about them in site design or marketing forums or they’ve seen little RSS or XML buttons popping up on websites everywhere.

If you’re like Joe and I, you might have clicked on one of those website buttons and ended up with a page full of code that looks a lot like raw html.

Even though it ‘looks like Greek’ (or should I say ‘geek’) you decided not to give up, and research RSS on Google or Yahoo.

What you’ll find, as your head swims over all the strange terminology and outdated articles leading as far back as 1998, is that this research only adds to the confusion! Does no one speak in English anymore?

XML, RDF, RSS, Atom, Syndication Feed, Aggregator, Parsing, Validators, News feed, web feed, site feed…what does it all mean?

Your browser couldn’t display it, you can’t make sense of it, so you eventually give up, saying: “This is not for me! This only applies to the techno-geeks, or the big content sites – not for me, the type of website I own, or my market!”

But you couldn’t be more wrong. I beg you not to give up. Feeds could have a huge impact on your income, your subscription count and your traffic!

By the end of this free ecourse, you will see that:

Let’s talk then about the origin and increasing popularity of feeds…

Originally RSS Feeds were created for broadcasting stations and newspapers, but once the ‘average Joe’ discovered them and started ‘spreading the news’, their popularity surged to the masses!

Only two of the most successful online gurus today (that I know of) are using RSS Feeds to stay in touch with their current readers while driving stampedes of new traffic to their website.

It’s a marketing goldmine!

That’s not to say that no other marketers are using and making truckloads of dollars from this new technology – they are – they just haven’t shared their secrets yet…

Searching for, reading and previewing RSS Feeds

You’re much more comfortable with the concept of RSS now, aren’t you?

What is a Blog?

A blog is a slang term for web log and is successfully written with more personality than fact. Why did I use ‘successfully’? Most blog surfers are looking for blogs with personality…opinionated, personality-rich posts.

A few words about this website you’re viewing – At the moment, in 2004, blogs are a hot topic. Therefore the ‘most read’ blogs are on the topic of blogging. What I mean to say is that the majority of people right now who spend time reading blogs like to read ABOUT blogs.

BUT the website still has value – do you see the search box on the left side of the screen? Type in a phrase or keyword specific to your niche or other area of interest.

This will give you a general idea of popular blog styles in your market or area of interest. Generally the content of a blog is a headline, some descriptive text, and a link.

I’m sure you’ve noticed now, between yesterday’s RSS exercise and today’s brief introduction to blogs, the similarities between the two.

Namely the content!

Often, the only difference between a blog and an RSS Feed is in the delivery. Where a blog formats to a browser screen, an RSS Feed is visible by either specialized website software (as seen on or in specialized desktop software (we cover the available software in the report).

RSS Readers – Who Reads the Feeds?

Have you been wondering just WHO these people are that are making feeds and blogs so popular?

Are they your friends?
Your Family?
Your Market?

It is our belief that most early adopters of RSS Feeds were web-savvy surfers frustrated with long load times and annoying pop-ups or flashing banner ads.
